Everyone resident in the UK is required to pay VAT on goods purchased at the current rate of 20%, and gold is no exception.
However, if you are a member of the serving forces and are stationed out of the country, it may be possible to reclaim this with a VAT and Excise Duty Exemption Certificate, form 15 (10) for goods ordered through a BFPO address.

These can be obtained from the UK Forces Military Finance Office.
