Wedding Rings-History
The first ceremonially exchanged finger ring can be traced back to the 3rd Egyptian dynasty around 2800 BC, the circular shape having no beginning or end signified eternity. The Romans adopted the ring as a symbol of the cycle of life and eternity. Initially they used a metal iron hoop, but in the second century changed to gold believing it was the ideal metal because of its beauty, lustre and resistance to rusting.
The Roman name for the third finger of the left hand was the Lech-man, meaning the medical finger. The Romans held the belief that an artery in that finger went straight to the heart. Consequently it is used as the finger on which we wear our betrothal wedding ring.
