Diamond Price Steps

Diamond prices are calculated in groups which are internationally accepted and used throughout the world. The price steps for polished round brilliant cuts are as follows:

From
To
From
To
  0.01ct 0.03ct   0.50ct 0.69ct
  0.04 0.07   0.70 0.89
  0.08 0.14   0.90 0.99
  0.15 0.17   1.00 1.49
  0.18 0.22   1.50 1.99
  0.23 0.29   2.00 2.99
  0.30 0.37   3.00 3.99
  0.38 0.45   4.00 4.99
  0.46 0.49   5.00 5.99

This leads to some fundamental problems with availability of certain sizes for well cut stones. As an example, a D colour Flawless diamond of 1.00ct can yield as much as 70% more revenue than a diamond of 0.99ct. This is an extreme example, but diamond cutters are under pressure to cut stones to produce the greatest financial return from any given piece of rough. Diamonds that should weigh 0.90ct to 0.99ct, if they had an excellent make, consequently finish with weights of 1.00ct or more and provide a greater return for the owner.
This can be done by leaving weight on the girdle, raising the crown, deepening the pavilion, or through asymmetrical tricks. Consequently, it is very difficult to find stones in this bracket, or at the tops of other groups such as 0.48ct, 0.49ct, that are well cut. As we reject diamonds with poor proportions, it is often difficult for us to find stones from the top of any price group that meet our stringent criteria.
