MOSAIC jewllery became fashionable through the 19th century due to the influence of Greek and Roman examples.Fine rods of coloured glass were glued into a picture, with a frame of glass or hardstone.Hardstone inlaid jewellery is known as Florentine work and was taken a step further by using agates, lapis, malachite, turquoise, ivory and coral ,cut into shapes and set in black marble which was mounted in gold or silver.

SCOTTISH PEBBLE jewellery is made from polished agate and granite, found in Scotland, which is shaped, polished and set in silver, although more expensive pieces were set in gold. This jewellery became very popular, particularly in the tourist trade, although it was exported to France and Germany.Due to the high demand, the silver mounts were later cast in Birmingham and so a lot of Scottish jewellery carries the Birmingham hallmark.
